On New Year’s night 1813/1814, the Prussian field marshall and commander of the Silesian army Gerhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742-1819) and his troops crossed the Rhine near the city of Kaub.
This led to the defeat of the French troops and ultimately put an end to the reign of Napoleon in Germany. The headquarters of Blücher and his troops was located in a 1870 baroque building, a former inn called “The city of Mannheim”.
The building now hosts the Blücher Museum, which explains the historical and cultural context of Blücher crossing the Rhine river. Two wallpapered and originally furnished rooms convey what life was like in the upper-middle class around the year 1800.
Some of Blücher’s personal items are on display, such as his tobacco box or snuff box, a right-hand glove, a writing case and some letters. The museum’s military paraphernalia collection from the time of the Napoleonic Wars conveys a vivid impression of weapons, uniforms and equipment of Prussian soldiers between 1813 and 1815.
