Braubach, the City of Roses and Vines, is the most northern of all the pretty towns with their half-timbered buildings and narrow, crooked alleys which spread out into the side valleys of the Rhine. Like the crescent of the moon, the Town of Roses and Vines forms a semi-circle around the castle hill on which the imposing Marksburg is enthroned. The only hilltop castle that wasn’t destroyed, the Marksburg has served as a defiant stronghold against foreign powers ever since the 11th century and is now the town’s landmark.
