Kreuzkapelle

Schwalbacherstraße, 65391 Lorch

Its establishment goes back to a historical event: In 1460, a battle took place between the Lorchers and the Lord of Sauerburg.

You can find the Cross Chapel coming from Lorch towards Wispertal, shortly after the exit of the village.
The establishment of the chapel goes back to a historical event from 1460:
In 1460, a battle took place between the people of Lorch and the Lord of Sauerburg.
The latter invaded the district of Lorch with 120 armed men on horseback and on foot to steal cattle. However, the people of Lorch defended themselves, overcame the attackers, and were able to reclaim the cattle.
In remembrance of the victory, the people of Lorch had a large cross erected.
Today, the chapel stands at the site of the cross.

The origin of the Cross Day pilgrimage lies in the erection of the first cross, which is still celebrated annually on the first Sunday in May. Every year, many residents of Lorch, as well as numerous guests from the surrounding areas and the Rheingau, participate in the procession that begins at the parish church of St. Martin in Lorch.

The chapel is usually open to visit from the outside and is only accessible on certain occasions, such as the Cross Day pilgrimage.
